I would strongly consider changing the storage engine to InnoDB.
You could use the explain feature in MySQL to take a look at where the
query stalls.

same ZFS filesystem(s) on those boxes.
We store multiple jobs per volume to allow for concurrent jobs with a
limit on how large each volume can grow.
