believe with spooling, maybe software compression and MD5/SHA checksumms
that speed is a little low, but not terrible. Depending on the FD doing
the checksumms and compression, he might simply be CPU bound.

the failure remain after retrying after a minute or two? I've used
some changers that tended to throw errors like the above for the first
half-a-minute or so following a reset. Waiting a minute was required
for the changer to settle back to normal.

i blow out the inside of the drive with air duster. that's sometimes
enough to get the tapes to load. however, i agree that the once the
drive begins to exhibit that behavior on a regular basis, you should
look to replace it.
