I'm surprised, I use Bacula to provide backups for several machines with a
total capacity well exceeding 5 Terabytes and 10 millions files, and I've never
had serious troubles. From time to time, I encounter problems, but some of them

I think what he wants is a way to make sure a tape is closed to, say, start a
week with a fresh tape.
Pretty easy to do with different pools/schedules/jobs actually.

Which of the three retention periods are you speaking of? File, job or
volume?
If it's volume, when you update, there is a 'update all volumes from pool'.

If you're using the default name, Linux/Unix AND using sqlite:
find / -name "bacula.db" will find it
