Kern,
Many thanks for pointing to the "Volume Poll Interval" storage
option. Since I am on Linux 2.6 the "Offline on Unmount" (and the
assoc "Close on Poll") didn't work (left the device blocked), but
keeping the device open and polling for a new tape did the trick.

I think that you could obtain the behaviour
you like defining a pseudo autochanger and replacing the mtx command. Of
course there will be some scripting to do.
