It's that time of year when everyone seems to be getting sick. Colds, coughs, the flu-you name it, somebody has some type of upper respiratory infection. One morning, your child wakes up with a slight fever, a stuffed-up nose and a cough. You take her to the doctor, expecting an antibiotic. The doctor tells you that antibiotics are not always the answer. Why? Did you know ... Two main types of germs - bacteria and viruses - cause infections. Bacterial infections can be cured by antibiotics - viral infections cannot. Viral infections cause most coughs (bronchitis), sore throats and all colds and flu. You recover from viruses when the illness has run its course. Bronchitis is just another name for cough illness. There is a mistaken belief that antibiotics are needed for bronchitis. They are rarely helpful, but everyone thinks antibiotics as soon as they hear the word bronchitis. This is not true! Viral infections may sometimes lead to bacterial infections. However, treating viral infections with antibiotics to prevent a bacterial infection does not work. Antibiotics are among the most powerful and important medicines known. Each time antibiotics are taken, sensitive bacteria are killed, but resistant ones remain to grow and multiply. Some resistant strains of bacteria are already untreatable. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria can be spread to others in the family and the community. These germs multiply and soon many people are carrying resistant bacteria. Stronger antibiotics will be needed in the future to fight these resistant strains. Let your doctor decide if you need an antibiotic. Here are some examples: Ear infections: There are several types; most need antibiotics, but some do not. Sinus infections: Antibiotics are needed for some long-lasting or severe cases. Most people can't tell if they have a cold or sinus infection, but it's most likely a cold if symptoms have been present for less than 10 to 14 days. Bronchitis/Cough: Antibiotics are rarely needed for bronchitis or cough. Sore throat: Viruses cause most cases. Only one kind, "strep throat," needs an antibiotic. A lab test is needed to determine if "strep" bacteria are present. Colds: Antibiotics have no effect on colds. You can help your child feel better by: Using saltwater nose drops four to five times per day. This is probably the best thing you can do to help the symptoms of a cold. Saltwater applied to the lining of the nose helps to clear the extra fluid and therefore helps to decrease congestion and cough. You can buy drops at your pharmacy, or you can make your own by mixing ¼ teaspoon of salt with 8 ounces of warm water. New mixtures should be made every day. You will need a bulb aspirator, which you can purchase at any pharmacy. Ask your pharmacist or doctor for help on how to use these drops. Being sure your child gets plenty of rest. Drinking lots of liquids. This is really true! Children lose fluids when they have a cold. Replace these fluids with water, juices or soups. Decongestants work for adults, but they may not be as effective in children. Talk to your doctor about whether they may be helpful.
