Just noticed the replies as I was looking into the issue again!
Glad you got it working Ralf; though I run this bareos on physical machine,
so cannot revert to snapshots. I read through your posts and and stumbled
across the solution for my issue.
All I needed to run was from bconsole ->
Now it works ... !
Solution quick steps:
1. Install all packages from download.bareos.org via sources.list.d and
apt-pinning
2. install bareos 15.2. - restore browser works
3. update to 16.3.1 - adapt webui rights -> browser works

audit log, and can now see the jobs ids being selected when trying to restore -
however the file tree pane is blank in the browser.
