Hi Henk,
I use magnesium on my hands, but not with lute playing. It's commonly used 
with rock climbing to prevent slipping from small holds, and this activity I 
do next to playing lute. The problem with magnesium is that it works only for 
a limited moment of time. With lute playing you cannot dig into a sack of the 
stuff every minute. I also assume that your instrument will become incredible 
dirty with the stuff, so I'm not even thinking about doing it.
I often use a leather window cloth beneath my lute to prevent it from 
slipping. Can also be used to clean/dry your fingers.
