A quick look at the Makefile reveals that things are compiled with the
following command:

          EMACS_PROG = xemacs -no-site-file -no-init-file

This means that if gnus can only be found via an entry in your .emacs, then it
won't work (is this a bug?).

I see that you're using oort gnus.  Do you have the 5.8.8 gnus package
installed as well?  If not, then that could be causing the problem.
