Is there a way to expand a BBDB mail alias into the full address
before sending the mail?

A more comprehensible description of the problem:
I discovered that all posters with a name starting with "H" and a
non-ASCII Norwegian letter as the second letter of their name (not
that uncommon in Norway) were displayed as me in gnus. (I have
bbd
BBDB seems to have trouble with names containing non-ASCII characters.
In the display of gnus all names having a non-ASCII character as the
second letter get identified as me. (The second letter of my first
name is (La)TeX \aa).

I use
(add-hook 'vm-mode-hook 'bbdb-insinuate-vm)
but putting
(bbdb-insinuate-vm) in "~/.vm" seems to produce the same results.
