I can connect via sftp using BBEdit with the root account.
I do have "Honor Saved State:Window position" set. But, just tested
with BBEdit still open from when I set the state. Closed the window I
open every day; re-opened, and it came up in the new, larger size.
Quit BBEdit, launched that file, and it opened in the new size.
I'll see if I can nail down

When I set Default Window Size it seems to work, but the next day,
often, size is back to the old, inadequate default. Maybe it's
restarting that triggers the change, not sure.
