After the advice given previously, I grabbed a nightly Fedora 13 spin
that has a 2.6.32.2-15.fc13.x86_64 kernel and ran from the live DVD.
going through dmesg it eventually gets to
b43-phy0: Broadcom 4312 WLAN found (core revision 15)

It is a problem with Broadcom.
When I get the firmware from the web site I get ucode5.fw, ucode13.fw,
ucode11.fw but no ucode15.fw(and other stuff with number 5, and 13)
