The majority of the time when I rescan my music library from "Clear Library and recan everything" the scanning stops while performing "Merge Various Artists" and album artwork is not displayed in SqeezeCenter. Also, it seems to take a long time to perform the scan, >20-25 minutes for ~5,500 track

So you don't have iTunes updater plugin? That starts iTunes in the backgrund and sometimes provokes the exact same behavior on my system (to be fair it's not iTunes updater, but iTunes itself, which crashes). Also: I didn't mean slow computer but slow internet connection (like UMTS or something).
