I haven't taken the time to try to track down why this is happening, but
I did notice that the packages are being created with bogus symlinks:
lrwxrwxrwx root/root         0 2008-01-31 10:56 ./etc/squeezecenter/server.conf
->
/tmp/build-7.0/squeezecenter/platforms/debian/squeezecenter/var/lib/squeezecenter/prefs/server.prefs
lrwxrwxrwx root/root         0 2008-01-31 10:56
./usr/share/squeezecenter/Plugins ->
/tmp/build-7.0/squeezecenter/platforms/debian/squeezecenter/var/lib/squeezecenter/Plugins

This was true for 7.0-16800, 7.0-16988, 7.0-17006, and 7.0-17040.  I
did not install any versions prior to 16800. If you fix the
/etc/squeezecenter/server.conf symlink then the server will actually
start. I actually cheated by symlinking /etc/squeezecenter to
/var/lib/squeezecenter/prefs/ as I wasn't sure how it would deal with
preferences in two different places.
