I would guess not, simply because I think the mp3 decoder is a
dedicated chip (and not reprogrammable). The SB2 was the first unit to
have software based decoding.

Any version 3.90 or later writes gapless info in the LAME tag by
default. This is good since a very large portion of my MP3s were
encoded with LAME 3.90.3. It may be time for me to get an SB3...
