I've just installed the 6/6 nightly and it fired up straight away.

After a bit more dabbling I've made a bat file to fire up mysqld using
Neils suggestions and I can now see it running in task manager but I'm
still seeing similar errors to Matt but without the connect fail IE

I'm seeing the same problem, I've tried moving my cache to C:\cache and
it didn't make any difference. I'm seeing lots of tables within my
cache dir wherever it is.
Should mysqld.exe show up in task manager because mine isn't?
