The issues seem to be entirely related to the update of the virtual
display--if I minimize SoftSqueeze everything behaves fine and Java's
only using 1-2% of the CPU. If I set Now Playing to scroll once and
stop or not to scroll it's also got acceptable peformance.
Is 3.0b3 still the version

There may be other ways, but I know you can get SoftSqueeze 3.0 with the
latest slimserver 6.5b builds.
What do you mean you can get it with them? I have the latest 6.5b
builds (and 6.5 official) and do not know where it is installed..?
Please elaborate more...
Thanks!

Will 3.0 also be available as a standalone RPM like previous versions?

You can always download the latest slimserver tar ball and extract the
SoftSqueeze folder. Or export from subversion.

Sorry. This is a really dumb question, but I have tried forum searches
and Google
Where do I get Softsqueeze 3.0? There are posts on this forum about it
but I couldn't see any that actually said how to get it. Google finds
the sourceforge site that seems to stop at 2.x and then some trunk
Where are the latest nightlies.
The beta directory hasn't updated since the 13th

Haven't monitored CPU utilization but can confirm items 1) 3) and 4)
from above post. Using Transporter skin from latest (6.5) svn on W2K.
Interesting that the display will momentarily update when I mouse-over
the skin but then returns to the frozen display.
