OK - now I realize how daft the original question probably was, but for
the uninitiated- here's what I did:
This for Debian Etch system, also hosting the Slimserver. First add
the "non-free" repository to /etc/apt/sources.list - "deb
http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian etch main non-free"
Run aptit
I appreciate the input guys - but this is running headless on Debian
Etch - all the latest updates applied.

No - this is on a Debian box, running quietly in a corner of my office,
never causing any trouble, just doing what it's supposed to do all the
time (until I get involved in another project like now!).

Are you running on Windows? I'll bet this bug is still valid for the
most recent Softsqueeze builds:
'Bug 4736: Softsqueeze on Windows doesn't accept command-line options'
The only way I've ever gotten Softsqueeze headless to work is to use

Thanks - that got a new answer...

Failed to find Softsqueeze libraries.
I've copied all the files subdirectories from the slimserver directory,
including /lib and /icons. Everything
Try this:
Code:
java -Djava.awt.headless=true -Dserver=localhost -Dskins=headless -jar
SoftSqueeze.jar

Oohh? I really don't understand why that is happening. So this is
really mostly blind guesswork, but you could try

Yep - I've copied all the softsqueeze files into another directory
/usr/share/headlesssq and trying to run from there - here's what

I've been trying to follow this thread - but when I try to run
softsqueeze, I get
(.:6608): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:
My server runs headless, so no graphical environment installed - any
thoughts? I'm running the latest stable Debian / slimserver /

This is likely a newby sort of question, but I hope to avoid doing the
digging myself:
Is there an easy way to get Softsqueeze 3.6 to run in headless mode
once it has been installed? I'm not familiar with how the downloaded
app differs from a jar, but when I look at what is being run it doesn't
