I see the same error in both 7.5 trunk with MySQL and 7.6 trunk with
SQLite. I think it's attempting to get an artist count here and I do
get a count - of 1. Maybe 1 is what gets returned when the attempt
fails (better than reporting 0, I guess).

I get stats when I browse into anything except Browse Genres [Genre]
Various Artists ? [Album].
i.e. if I browse into the list of albums within Browse Genres Rock Various
Artists, I get the library stats,

I just updated my SVN checkout to 7.5/trunk revision 30686.
Upon restarting server, I played a couple of tracks, then in the Web UI I tried
to Browse Genres Blues Various Artists Blues Legends.
Clicking on Various Artists for genre Blues seemed to take quite some time (~
10 seconds).
