Stop Giving Yourself the Short End of the Stick!

by Guy Finley

Key Lesson: Any form of measuring yourself by an unkind action of another
towards you is like looking into a badly fractured mirror and then blaming
yourself for the shattered image that you see there.

Let Go of Self-Recrimination

The self-defeating desires that drag us around belong to a nature that
always feels incomplete. Nothing this false self tells us to do does one
thing to loosen its hold on us. Fighting with it -- as we have done in the
past -- only slays "half the foe," while giving in to it leads nowhere but
to more self-recrimination. This torment, and all other suffering associated
with its kind, is needless. There's only one thing actually wrecking us: we
keep believing in -- and then acting on -- false promises made to us by a
false nature. This is why whenever we suddenly feel incomplete -- in some
way, inadequate -- we must stop trying to "do" something about this unwanted
sense of self, and choose instead to see the parts of us that want us to
identify with that feeling. Choosing this new kind of watchfulness is the
seed of a new beginning. Rather than go along with the old willfulness that
seeks instant gratification, it is we who take hold of our own attention and
place it where we wish it held... on what is already whole and complete
within us. But this spiritual step is only our first action to be taken.

As soon as we are centered in this healing remembrance -- even if we do not
yet feel the Good we call upon come into us -- we must still give ourselves
to it, surrender our self completely into what is already complete within us
-- even if this act of giving is just to our hope for a wholeness yet to be
known. This is the true enactment of our new understanding: We don't just
want to "let go and let God;" we now know that we need to, because we've
seen what happens when we hold onto what's hurting us.
