Yes, a short addendum: no, I do have a firewall (Doorstop and
LittleSnitch running) however, they are configured to allow BibDesk
any network connections.

I am using my laptop in my office and at home. While I have
absolutely no problem searching various z39.50 bibliographical
databases from inside Bibdesk when I am in my office, it simply does
not work when I am at home. (It never retrieves any results, no
matter what the search term is
