Quick question: Is there is a way to protect groups from being accidentally
deleted with the delete button? A confirmation dialog would be perfect.

No, but you can undo it (unless it's a search group).

Preferences -- General Application Behavior Preferences -- warn
before editing the name of the group.
It seems that deleting the group counts as editing its name.
