Spring is here and with the increased bird activity we expect more reports
on Ontbirds. Please do not overload the system with reports of common birds
that can be seen anywhere in the province. Please continue to report
concisely and with directions the following:

Thought I might add a few things to the list that haven't been mentioned
today. At Pt. Pelee I saw 2 fox sparrows, 2 white throated sparrows ,1
carolina wren, 1 yellow rumped warbler , and several groups of rusty
blackbirds.

Went outside around noon today to see if any of my
plants had survived this incredibly long cold freeze.
As I opened the side door I heard a Common Grackle and
called for Nancy to come and see it. After seeing it,
it flew away to the southwest and I continued my

There were many ducks today along the Grand River and Lake Erie (NOT frozen
over as reported by the media).
The Common X Barrow's Goldeneye was spotted in Caledonia, about 300 m
downstream from the bridge over the Grand River . It was almost exactly as

I realize that this post is somewhat off topic in that rather than being a
bird report it is instead a question. (Now no need to E-mail me Mark
please.) It had been my assumption up until today that most if not all
icterid migrational habits were diurnal.
Given the sudden and dramatic appearance
At 2 pm while standing on the Old Mill Bridge, over the Humber River, I
observed a Turkey Vulture. It soared and then flew to the northeast. My
sidekick Dennis Duckworth was also in attendance.
Directions: The Old Mill Bridge is about 1/2 km north of Bloor St. near the
entrance to Etienne B
Around noon today, whilst searching for Lapland Longspurs(unsuccessfully) on
Heritage Road, a Tree Swallow flew overhead. It was with a group of snow
buntings and kept flying to the southwest. It was spotted by Dennis
Duckworth and was seen by a group of other birders as well.

The first red-winged blackbirds of the season were calling in Gilford
this afternoon. Gilford is approx. 15km north of Bradford, on Cook's
Bay of Lake Simcoe. Also thought I heard a killdeer overhead, and,

Hi Ontbirders,
With the arrival of warm weather finally, spring migrants have shown up in
numbers. At Fawn Island south of Sombra there were hundreds of ducks to
look at. This was in mid afternoon, so lighting was not the greatest.
Among them were at least two dozen GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 1 BLUE-WING
With this weekend's long-awaited warm temperatures, the migrant
floodgates have opened. I know this will be one of many reports
regarding new arrivals. Of possible interest to York Region birders are
the following observations: male RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS seemed to
materialize from the ethers this
Although the first day of the first warm spell of the season brought fewer
birds than expected to the Niagara Peninsula Hawkwatch at Grimsby, ON,
species variety was excellent.
