Yesterday (Feb 28/08) I observed 8 Bald Eagles in the area of Hamilton Harbour immediately west and south of Canada Centre for Inland Waters and the Ship Canal. At one point 6 were sitting together on the ice quite near the SW corner of CCIW property while another 2 were further away on the ice.

At -25C it is very hard indeed to think of spring although it is the time of year when things should start to happen. I can't imagine that there is any open water so those few foolhardy waterfowl that are still around will be confined to the Dupont lagoon or the ferry channels to Amherst and Wolfe.

There were more observers this week, and consequently, more sightings. An American Three-toed Woodpecker was the week's unusual highlight species (see below). Birders should check the feeders at the Visitor Centre, and at the West Gate, which are the best sites for multiple species at the moment.
