Late this afternoon I had the opportunity to take some time and check
out the
Holland Marsh area for Snowy Owls and other winter birds.
At the horse ranch at the corner of Hwy.9 and Jane St. there were several
hundred Snow Buntings feeding on the snowy fields amongst the horses. They

On the heels of Ron's note from yesterday, today (Fri Jan 30) I had a
green morph Pine Siskin at my feeders. It seems to have arrived along
with a massive increase in the number of Common Redpolls (high of 40
yesterday after the first ones arrived just 2 weeks ago), up to 100+
today!

Late yesterday and this afternoon I had a total of 6 Great Gray Owls east of
Dunrobin. There was a concentration of 3 owls along Greenland Road NW of Thomas
Dolan Parkway, 2 along Vances Side road and one along March Valley Road. On a
sad note, this afternoon I discovered the Boreal
Depending on wind, wave and ice conditions, the Burlington Ships Canal,
often allows killer close up views of interesting winter
species. When conditions are right, the canal can be filled with waterfowl.

The good birds at Chaffey's Lock (Trumpeter Swan, Wood Duck and Green-winged
Teal) prompted a group to check out the other lock stations between there
and Kingston. They found a Hooded Merganser at Kingston Mills and a Belted
Kingfisher at Upper Brewer's. Almost all the locks had Canada Geese, Am.
