Today's outing was OFO's 25th annual field trip to the
Carden Alvar. Ron Pittaway led the first Carden field trip in 1992. Today's
group
of 37 birders tallied 76 species. We saw many of the target birds including
superb views of Loggerhead Shrike, Sedge Wren, Upland Sandpiper, Grasshopper
Sparrow
Today's 10 participants on the OFO Skunk's Misery trip were treated to
great views of Cerulean Warbler, Hooded Warbler and Acadian Flycatcher, all
within the first half hour! Other highlights included Blue-winged Warbler,
Mourning Warbler, a very cooperative Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Tufted Titmouse,
This a summary of results from today's watch which extended from 5:50 am to
4:00 pm. Tom Lane and I were there for the duration ... our results made
more complete by the much appreciated assistance from M.C. Coburn, Ross
Harris, Sean DeKelver and David Creelman.
Whimbrels recorded (TOTAL = 46):
Despite the heat, 11 teams took part in the annual Carden Challenge.
Winners in the Competitive Birding category with 133 species were the
Cardenals (Dan Bone, Chris Ellingwood, Candice Talbot, Marc Hecnar and
Lucas Handley). Followed closely by the Snakes on the Plain team from the
Biodiversity

After a prior absence of 81 years, this is
the second consecutive year that a pair of Piping Plovers has initiated
nesting on the Canadian shore of Lake Ontario in the Greater Toronto
Area.

One Red Knot is still present in this location. Apparently there were two here
earlier this morning. A Marbled Godwit reported from yesterday on eBird was
apparently still present this morning but flew off at dawn.
