This slaty-backed gull is on the breakwall at Sunnyside, about 500 metres east
of the White bridge.

There was what I think is an eclipse plumage Cinnamon Teal at the Emo sewage
lagoons on July 5th and again today. I'm not familiar with this species so, out
of an abundance of caution, I'm posting it as "probable", but I can't see what
else it could be. I have photos and video which I will post
OCWA at North end of marsh near walking path, SNOW on docks in the bay.

I just discovered an Eastern Phoebe at the NE corner of the pond that is near
Very Beach Park. It is in the Phragmites. This area is really hoping with
birds, as there are also 2 Swamp Sparrows here, a NOMO, a flicker, and a Winter
Wren.

A bunch of us had fabulous looks at the kiskadee today, at about 1:20 P.M., a
few hundred metres south of the yellow cottage along the Marsh trail at Rondeau

Also present there were both yellowlegs, Killdeers, White-rumped Sandpipers,
Semipalmated Sandpiper and Least Sandpiper.
The best viewing is obtained by walking into the conservation area on the west
side of the pond and following the path into the cedar woods, It opens up into
a clearing,

The first year male King Eider was present today at 12:30 P.M. at the mouth of
the Humber River, as was the Red-necked Grebe, just up the river beside the
Lakeshore Road bridge. A Snowy Owl was present on the breakwall, and a Merlin
was seen well at Humber Bay Park East.

A group of us had the Wilson's Warbler and an Orange-crowned Warbler in the
corner of the Jehova's Witnesses Kingdom Hall parking lot, where the yew bushes
are, this morning about 9:45 A.M. I also had a Yellow-rumped Warbler, another
Orange-crowned Warbler near the north corner of the water
The painted bunting was seen for several mlnutes by many observers today at
11:20 in the magnolia tree from in front of #3. A scope is recommended for
satisfactory views.
Arkendo Dr is first street off lakeshore west of Winston Churchill drive.

Charley Adey, Tom Jackman, myself and a fourth observer whose name I did not
get had good looks at the Solitaire at 11:45AM today. It was in a mountain ash
beside the driveway of 158 Hannah Rd.

There was a juvenile Purple Sandpiper today at 4:30 P.M. offering superb looks
as it probed amongst the abundant algae on the shore at Shell Park, on the
south side of the pier.
Elsewhere, the adult male King Eider was also offering superb looks near the
St. Catharines Marina in Port Weller.
The Cattle Egret was being seen very well from the parking lot of the
Carruthers Creek Golf Course at 12:30 today.
Directions: Take Lakeridge Road south from Bayly St. in Whitby, then take the
first right turn into the Golf Course. Park in the gravel parking lot and look
north.

The Hudsonian Godwit was present at Owen Point when I was there today between
3:30 and 4:30 P.M. Other shorebirds at Owen Point were 46 Sanderlings, 3
Dunlins, 4 Semipalmated Plovers, about 30 Semipalmated Sandpipers, 5 Pectoral
Sandpipers, 1 Least Sandpiper, 1 White-rumped Sandpiper and 1
The Least Bittern offered super views today. Closer to the parking lot, there
was a flock of warblers and vireos that included Red-eyed Vireo, Warbling
Vireo, Cape May, Wilson's, Palm and Nashville Warblers.

Arriving at Colonel Sam Park about 5:15 P.M. today, we didn't at first see the
YCNH from the viewing platform. My Dad and I started walking around, and bumped
into a birder who showed us what he said was the Yellow-crowned Night Heron.
Only problem was, it was a Black-crowned Night Heron
I paid an early morning visit today to Prospect and Wylie Roads. Interesting
birds on Prospect Road were a LEAST BITTERN (heard only), GRASSHOPPER and
CLAY-COLOURED SPARROWS, a GREEN HERON, and an OSPREY on its impressively large
nest built on top of a steel tower just south of the second house
I decided to follow up today on some birds that have recently been posted on
Ontario Birds. At Cityview Park in Burlington, I had a CLAY-COLOURED SPARROW, a
VESPER SPARROW and at least 2 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS, all singing. I also had
three Grasshopper Sparrows just west of 6th Concession West
The 3 Whimbrels originally reported by Stan Long today were still at Reesor
Pond when I arrived there about 7:20 P.M. However, at 7:36 P.M. they lifted off
and did not look like they were coming back. Other shorebirds were 2
Semipalmated Plovers, 2 Killdeer, 4 Spotted Sandpipers, about 50
There were three Harlequin Ducks together this morning - 1 adult male and two
first year males - about halfway between Thickson's Point and the gazebo. Other
species of interest in the area (including Thickson's Woods) were 2 Ravens, an
Orange-crowned Warbler, and 73 other species of birds.
A male Golden-winged Warbler was seen and heard near the parking lot of
Morningside park this morning, amongst 52 species of birds recorded there this
morning. This park was really hopping with birds today, as I'm sure are many
other locations today after the warm, rainy night.

migrant, flying around and calling frequently, at the intersection of Waverly

come in in late afternoon and spend the night on the pond are landing on the
ice itself and spreading out. This enabled me to easily spot two CACKLING GEESE

The GREAT GRAY OWL was being viewed by about 30 people at noon today on
CedarBrook Trail, a half kilometre or so north of Columbus Road, west of the
village of Brooklin. The SNOWY OWL was at the docks of the Whitby Marina at the
west end of Front St. (runs west off Brock St.) around 1 P.M.
The PURPLE SANDPIPER was on the south side of Humber Bay East today, from which
point you could also see the PIED-BILLED GREBE. A 4th year BALD EAGLE showing
an interesting (to me) combination of pure or almost pure white head combined
with a tail showing substantial dark mottling was also in
This morning I had a male RING-NECKED PHEASANT fly across Sewell's Road, near
the farm located at 1208 Sewell's Road, a kilometre or so south of Steeles Ave.
At 18 Reesor Road, which is the site of an active feeder that may be viewed
from the road, there were 2 RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS.

This afternoon at Adam Beck, in addition to several FY and SY birds, I had an
adult Iceland Gull which struck me as unusual in that it had absolutely no
black or gray in the wingtips, even when viewed in flight at 22x.

Visiting my parents' house today, where I grew up and birded very intensively
from 1980 to 1990, sporadically since then, I was fortunate to see a flock of
about 70 Bohemian Waxwings fly by. There seem to a lot of them around this
winter and early spring. This sighting is especially significant

I observed 3 flocks, totalling nearly 100 birds, this afternoon near Old Finch
and Morningview, Sewell's Road just south of the southern set of railway
tracks, and near Staines Pond. which is on Staines Road just east of
Morningside Ave. in Scarborough, Toronto.

During a walk in the Rouge valley today, I came across a male Ring-necked
Pheasant beside Reesor Road, about 100 m south of the Dog Pad Doggy Daycare
(about 1 km south of Steeles Ave.) Other sightings of lesser note included a
pair of Great Horned Owls, a pair of Cooper's Hawks apparently on
There are currently two Snow Geese on Staines Pond, along with a few hundred
Canada Geese. Earlier in the afternoon, I saw approximately 25 Wild Turkeys in
the corn stubble south of Steeles Ave., in between Sewell's Road and Reesor
Road. Canada Geese and Mallards were feeding alongside them.
The Bohemian Waxwings reported yesterday were still to be found today, albeit
only about 35 of them. They were on Sideline 24, feeding on what appeared to be
cherries, a few hundred metres north of Concession 7. Concession 7 is the
first concession road north of Hwy 7, running east from the

As has been abundantly documented, the Townsend's Solitaire was seen by many
today. The best place to look for the bird today (and where a number of us
observed it) was from where the driveway of house #8671 meets Langstaff Road.
The bird seems to like perching in the top of some of the trees
A Red-bellied Woodpecker was near the mouth of the Rouge River yesterday. This
morning, a Great Blue Heron is standing on the ice of Staines Pond.
The mouth of the Rouge River is located at the end of Lawrence Ave. E. in
Scarborough. Staines Pond is just south of the intersection of Morningside
From my own sightings as well as talking to others present, I know that
Orange-crowned Warblers, the Bay-breasted/Blackpoll Warber, Nashville Warbler
and Yellow-rumped Warbler were all present and giving excellent views at
Sedgewick Park today. I didn't hear about anybody seeing the Cape May.
Other waterfowl present at Humber Bay Park east included about 25 Ruddy Ducks,
230 Redhead, 4 Hooded Mergansers and 120 Greater Scaup.
Humber Bay East is at the foot of Park Lawn Road in Etobicoke.

Yesterday at the McDougall township dump there were 5 Bald Eagles, 4 Glaucous
Gulls, 56 Herring Gulls and about 75 Ravens. The McDougall township dump is on
McDougall Road, 6 km east of Hwy 400/69 at Parry Sound. If the gate is closed,
drive a few hundred metres further east to Haines Lake
A winter wren was beside the washroom building by the lighthouse today, along
with a Yellow-rumped Warbler, which was very near the feeders. There were no
Purple Sandpipers on Gull Island today, but there was a spectacular dark morph
Rough-legged Hawk, as well as a Northern Harrier and 28 Snow
A Red-bellied Woodpecker was frequenting the feeder just down the road from the
Hwy 50 entrance. Directions: Take Hwy 50 to just north of Steeles Ave., turn
left into the conservation area parking lot. Feeders are just down the road.

I saw the adult Greater White-fronted Goose reported yesterday by Stan Long at
3:50 P.M. today. It was on the tip of the narrow peninsula that juts out into
the middle of Reesor Pond.

The male Surf Scoter reported yesterday at Humber Bay West was present today,
amidst about 100 Redhead and close to 2000 Greater Scaup. 2 Horned Grebes were
also present there. Humber Bay West is on the lakeshore just west of Park
Lawn. At Arkendo Park in Oakville (foot of Arkendo St.), I was
Three Brant were feeding from the algae-covered rocks near Thickson's Point
today. A Barred Owl was nearby in a grove of pines. Birds in Thicksons Woods
itself included White-winged Crossbill, Hermit Thrush ande Winter Wren.
