A friend just called to tell me that there are turkey vultures circling just
above the treetops on Christopher Plummer Dr. in Stratford. Forget the
groundhogs and listen to the turkey vultures instead.

that they are domestic, it's more likely that these are
Whooper Swans. Unfortunately the town website and newspaper don't say anything
about them. I plan to ask the town what species they are. Message me privately
if you'd like to know.

did think it a bit odd that a pair of wild swans would decide to hang out
Around 8 pm this evening (May 27) I saw a pair of swans at the south end of
Commando Lake. Both birds had more yellow on the bill than typical Tundra
Swans, but one of the birds had an extensive, somewhat raised, patch of yellow
covering half of the upper mandible. By the time I remembered that
I had a late start this morning and did not get to the lagoons until almost 11
am. I spent about 1 hour walking around the perimeter, inspecting the exposed
mud (sewage?) flats. I saw several Spotted Sandpipers and Killdeer but did not
find the Red Knot.
Cliff Swallows were collecting mud and
the trail so he could finish his walk! Turkeys are
frequently observed on the shoulder of the park road and ON the road. They
are very slow to move away even when they are not displaying, so keep your
eyes open for them as you drive through the park.

neither of these species is rare, it is really nice to see them come
back after a long winter.
