While on a wild goose chase today (unsuccessful), I found six snowy owls south
of Mitchell's Bay. Four were in fields near the intersection of Winter Line Rd.
(Chatham-Kent Road 34) and Marsh Line. Two more were in fields off Angler Line,
west of Winter Line.

This afternoon there was a flock of several hundred tundra swans in the field
to the north of Settler Sideroad. This road runs west from Essex Road 35, also
know as Comber Sideroad. Road 35 can be accessed from highway 401.

Although I missed the lark sparrow (again), I was somewhat consoled by the snow
goose at Niagara Parkway and Anger Ave. and a snowy owl which flew overhead and
landed in a tree behind 1387 Niagara Parkway.

Following up on Jason Putnam's report from yesterday, I checked the area around
12:30 today and found two Sandhill cranes. They were in a farmer's field on the
east side of Crowland Road, just north of Schisler Road.
Directions from QEW: take Lyons Creek Rd. exit, go west on Biggar Rd.
into Hollow Road. Follow
Hollow Road through the “S” bends to Barron Road. Park entrance is on Barron
Road just north of the corner of Barron and
Hollow Road.

Today Karl Dix and I birded the east pier of Port Weller, at the north end of
the Welland Canal. Among the usual suspects was a small flock of very vocal
snow buntings near the easternmost end of the pier. For those fortunate enough
to have seen the sage thrasher a few years back, this is the

Canada geese beside the Niagara Parkway, just south of the Peace Bridge in Fort
Erie.

A yellow -throated warbler is in the small park on the lakeshore at 11 Church
St., Stoney Creek. Church St. runs between Green Rd. and Teal Ave. Green Rd.
can be accessed from the north service road of QEW.
