The flock of Bohemians I reported earlier in November have stayed around our
house for the last few days. Today they were close by and at the same time a
late migrating Pheobe stopped in the backyard for a short rest.
These sightings are all very close to the corner of Thomas and Herriott Sts
A flock of roughly 50 Bohemian Waxings passed through town today. At 2:30 they
were at Thomas and Harriott and at 3:30 they were at High and Bridge st. They
were moving slowing south

On the way home from Montreal to Ottawa on Hwy 417, today (Oct 29th) at 4:30
PM, just a little ways north of the exit 51 overpass there were three large
flocks of Snow Geese. They were in 3 contiguous farmers fields on the west
side of the highway, and one field looked like it had snowed there
Between 5:30 and 6:30 this evening, Susan and I watched as roughly 30 Nighhawks
flew over our backyard and along the Mississippi River just to the south of us.
They were flying back and forth parallel to the river feeding.

After an excellent hike around the Mill of Kintail CA on Saturday Mar 7,
just northwest of Almonte, and as we stood in the parking lot a small flock
of Canada Geese passed 50 feet overhead with one Snow Goose in the group

It has been an excellent year for finches in my backyard in Carleton Place.
We have had Pine Siskens for most of the winter with flocks of 30 to 40 at
times, but they are now down to a few each day. Redpolls have been present

The CP CBC took place on Decemebr 27, a day that started out with very icy
roads and ended with heavy rain and +7C temperatures. There were 31
observers and over 20 feeder counts throughout the area. There were 48
species, up from 42 last year and a total of 5000+ birds which is almost

Saw our first two flocks of Snow Buntings this winter this week. First
flock of about 50+ were on county rd 17 just south of Almonte and the second
flock of 100+ were opposite Wallmart in Carleton Place. Now we feel ready
for the CBC

I was out for a quick stroll and look at the birds around Dick Bell Park off
of Carling at noon today. At the lighthouse looking across the harbour
entrance there sat a Snowy Owl on the Rcoks being mobbed by multiple crows.
He sat in between the two boat ramps in front of a yacht club building
Sitting in our back yard near downtown Carleton Place this afternoon Susan
and I saw a juvenile Peregrine Falcon fly over our house being haraased by a
Merlin. A few hours later it was spotted on the south side of town.
Meanwhile fall migration is in full swing here. The backyard is full of
On the way home from work tonight at 7 PM I spotted 15 Nighthawks just north
of Appleton. They were flying very low over a field just north of the
Appleton soccer fields. This is the first year so far in 20+ years of
looking, that I have seen none in Carleton Place.

We decided to try for a century on July 31 and Aug 1 by birding the Valley.
We hit Mill of Kintail, Bill Mason CA, Andrew Haydon Park, Mud Lake, Moodie
Dr/Trail Rd Ponds, Leitrim Road at the airport, Petrie Island, Alfred and
Mer Bleu Bogs and Alfred lagoons. We reached 93 species in 2 days wi
The male Eurasian Widgeon was still at the Burnside Ross-How Pit pond at 2
PM. He was with 4 American Widgeons in the main part of the pond near the
north end of the pond.
Directions Take 416 south from Ottawa to Fallowfield rd. Go west on
Fallowfield one road to Moodie Drive and turn left
We have had increasing numbers of Redpolls for the last two weeks with maybe
50 around at any one time. Today we had a Hoary Redpoll,which was larger
than the rest with a nearly competely white head. We assume this is one of
the Greenland varieties.

A beautiful and warm day was enjoyed by 6 birders on Sunday, April 6th at
Presqu'ile P.P. south of Brighton Ontario. Highlights of the day were:

First time I have seen a Ruffed Grouse inside the town limits of Carleton
Place. At noon on Saturday, Mar 8th, on the south side of Coleman St just
east of Park, a single Ruffed Grouse was feeding high up in a tree. Guess

A day trip to Amherst Island started with a heavy snow squall and a cold
wind. The weather improved as the day went on and the birding was good.

Today (Monday) we had between 500 and 700 Bohemian Waxwings in our backyard.
They occupied 5 trees and stayed long even to do a reasonably accurate count
and get pictures. The flock was in the wooded area between Yonge and
Edgewater Sts, north of the corner of Hazeldean and Terry Fox Dr.

This should be a great year for finches if my backyard is any indication.
We have Redpolls and Pine Grosbeaks in small flocks already.
