My buddy Robin from Newmarket and I took a tour of Mud Lake (Britannia) and
Shirley's Bay on Sunday to see what was on the wing. It seems it is getting to
be a tradition as he visits close to my BD each year.In 4+ hours of
leisurely birding we got 70 species with a few challenging
Saw three large flocks of Snow Buntings with Horned Larks mixed in on the drive
home from work. First flock was just off March Rd near Carp Rd intersection.
They have been there for weeks. Second flock on Golden Side Rd south of March
Rd three qtrs of the way to Almonte from Kanata. The
I travelled down from Carleton Place to hook up with my buddy Robin in
Newmarket and then off to Hamilton at 6:30 am for my target lifer the King
Eider. hell it was a slam dunk with 7 spotted the week before. We might even
pick up that elusive Barnacle (Bill as he is affectionately known).
The 59th Carleton Place CBC was conducted on December 27th after a miserable
day of freezing rain on the 26th. There were 32 field observers and 25 feeder
counts.
We had 40 species and 4562 individuals. This is down 7 species and 500
individuals from the previous year as well as being
At the corner of Leggett Dr and Herzberg Rd in west end of Ottawa (Kanata) I
spied 30 Bohemian Waxwings huddled in a tree at 2:30 PM. Take March Rd exit on
417 and go North. Exit right onto Herzberg, cross Carling and the intersection
with Leggett is 1 block north

Twice this month my wife and I have seen groups of Nighthawks moving through
Carleton Place around 7 PM. A typical group is up to 6 birds and they fly up
and done the river for 30 minutes and then move on.
We have also had small groups of warblers in the backyard (we live right in
First upland sandpiper of the year for me and susan. On Diamondview Rd about 1
Km north of March rd at 3 PM. The bird was perched on the hydro wires on th
left side of the road.
From Ottawa take Hwy 417 west to Carp Rd exit. Go north on Carp rd until
lights at March road. Turn left and go
The Chukar was still on the side of Pine Ridge Rd, west of Ottawa at 5 PM on
Wed, May 23. It is now at the corner of Old Almonte Rd and Pine Ridge Rd,
eating dandelion heads.
Take Hwy 417 west from Ottawa, exit north at Carp Road. Go north to
Richardson Side Rd and turn left. Down
Last report I sent had the Chukar at Old Almonte Road and Pine Ridge Rd. It is
actually called Spruce Ridge Rd where it meets Old Almonte Rd. Sorry for any
mis-direction.

The crazy chipping sparrow is still here at our feeder in carleton place. it
had a routine of morning and afternoon feeds, but with the cold snap it has
been at the feeder alot more often each day.

Despite the fog and rain followed by spirited wind, our Jan 6, Sat trip to
Amherst Island for raptors was successful. 3 Snowys, 7+ Long Earreds, and 1
Saw Whet (group we met saw 2 Saw Whets). Few hawks with a handful of red tails,
rough legs and 2 kestrals. Few ducks with mostly mallards, 2
Someone forgot it was winter, as we have had a chipping sparrow at our feeder
for over 2 weeks. It was seen again today, Sat Jan 6 at our Carleton place
backyard feeder. Got several pics.
Pileated Woodpecker also seen flying down the north edge of the Mississippi

Hwy 417 take exit Acres Rd north, turn left onto Carling at T junction. Drive
along to next lights and turn right into dick bell
For the last 4 days I have observed an Uplands Sandpiper perched on various
telephone poles beside the road between home and work (Carleton Place to
Ottawa) It can be seen on County Rd 49 (March Rd) between Carp Rd and
Diamondview Rd. Carp Rd can be reached from Hwy 417 as you drive west from
Wed, May 24, Afternoon at the Alfred Lagoons, 1 hr east of Ottawa. Saw the
Stilt Sandpiper but no Ruff in sight. Also saw Peregrine Falcon, 3 American
Bitterns, and many Ruddy Ducks.
Take Hwy 17 east from ottawa to Alfred, turn south on Peat Moss Rd and 2 Km
south are the lagoons. A permit
