The prothonotary warbler is still entertaining many birders who walk the Tulip
Tree Trail. A hooded warbler treated birders as an excellent bonus while
waiting for the prothonotary.

A clay-coloured sparrow was seen at both the Tulip Tree Trail and near the
Marsh Trail on Water St.

The morning bird hike along the Marsh Trail produced a calling least bittern,
American bittern, sedge wren, marsh wren, sora and a Virginia rail was seen
skulking in the cattails.

OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE - MAY 13 2005 AT 9:00 PM

This is Chris Lewis reporting....

A warm beginning to the week caused many more migrants to arrive
in Ottawa, and then a change to cold weather and north winds seems
to have caused them to stay.

Songbirds were of course the highlights, with Warbling and Red-
eyed Vireo now common, and 20 of our 25 regularly-occurring
species of warblers have been reported since May 9th, mostly from
the Britannia Conservation Area but also from other locations.
Uncommon migrants included Orange-crowned and Northern Parula, and
other goodies for our area were Cape May, Blackburnian and Bay-
breasted. Least Flycatcher, Eastern Kingbird, House Wren, Rose-
breasted Grosbeak and Bobolink have begun to move in, Veery and
Wood Thrush were also new since May 11th, and White-crowned
Sparrows are still moving through.

A report from the Alfred sewage lagoons included several
interesting birds, as well as new information regarding access for
birders to these lagoons. On May 10th, there were 6 Redhead, 12
Ruddy Ducks, 16 Gadwall, 16 Northern Shoveler, 15 Lesser
Yellowlegs, 2 Least Sandpiper, and 6 Wilson's Phalaropes. An
access permit for birders is now available from the Alfred and
Plantagenet Township office - please contact Richard Villeneuve at
(613) 679-2292 for information about purchasing a permit to bird
at these very productive lagoons.

In other reports of interest, on May 13th, 2 Green Herons were
along Watt's Creek on the south side of Carling Ave. opposite
Rifle Rd. a Caspian Tern was seen flying briefly over Mud Lake at
Britannia and then heading towards the river on the 11th, 2 Common
Terns were in the same area on the morning of the 13th, a Northern
Mockingbird was at the Arboretum of the Central Experimental Farm
on the 11th and was seen again in the "backyard garden" of the
Fletcher Wildlife Garden on the evening of the 13th. And last but
not least, 2 of the 4 Peregrine Falcon eggs on the nest ledge of
the Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown Ottawa have hatched, and both
young were viewed here on the 11th.

Thank you - Good Birding!
