Weather: The weather was pleasant from beginning to end. Even in the morning, when the red sun arose above the horizon, we were warmer than during the warmest part of yesterday. There was a light wind all day, which started from the northwest, shifted to become westerly, and was southerly by the end of the day. Barometric pressure dropped rapidly from 12 to 3. Raptor Observations: We had nice, long streams of Turkey Vultures flying over Gibraltar's treeline, then to the north of us, between 10 and 11. When the wind shifted to come from the west and then the south, the migrating TVs began passing far to the north of us. During the last hour of counting, we spotted a distant Golden Eagle taking a route similar to which the TVs took in the morning. Several Bald Eagles were also moving today. The same number of Northern Harriers (10) flew over today as flew over yesterday. Non-raptor Observations: A Red-breasted Nuthatch was singing this morning, as were several White-throated Sparrows. Several groups of House Finches and American Robins flew overhead, as did one group of 25 Blue Jays. At least 635 American Crows migrated over the site today, as did a Common Loon, a couple Sandhill Cranes, and a couple Monarch butterflies. Huge groups of Red-winged Blackbirds flew over this morning, with a count of at least 5,530 individuals. Predictions: Tomorrow is predicted to be cloudy with a northwest wind. This wind direction is generally favorable for seeing raptors at our site. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Detroit River Hawk Watch (greg_norw...@fws.gov) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
