The proceedings brightened in the afternoon, with bluer skies and sunnier conditions overall. The wind was light to moderate and out of the south and southeast. Raptor Observations: Not a bad start to the season. Bald Eagle and Osprey were active throughout. In addition to migrating birds on the move, there were several other individuals of both species seen successfully plucking prey from the lake. Non-raptor Observations: Purple Martins (136) were the big story, pushing past in bunches during the first two hours of the watch. Northern Rough-winged (84), Tree (47), Barn (39) and Bank (2) swallows joined them along with Chimney Swift (12). Other species observed included: Bobolink (4), Green Heron (1), Baltimore Oriole (2), Lesser Yellowlegs (8), Cedar Waxwing (18), Canada Goose (9), Red-winged Blackbird (122), Belted Kingfisher (1), American Goldfinch (13), House Finch (7), Mourning Dove (5), Forster's Tern (4), Caspian Tern (6), Common Grackle (8), Warbling Vireo (2), Great Blue Heron (2), Great Egret (4) and Wood Duck (2). Predictions: Overcast early with some clearing in the afternoon. There is a 50 percent chance of scattered morning showers. The wind should again be out of the south, shifting more westerly as the day goes on. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein (steinj...@gmail.com) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
