First found on Friday of last week by Chris Heffernan, the immature male and female King Eider were relocated today just NW of the Bird Observatory at Prince Edward Point. To make things even better, the number has increased to a total of 4 birds (3 females). They performed well, close to shore. I will have photos up later this evening. Also of interest was a Turkey Vulture at the same location.
Directions: There are many routes. I suggest plugging these co-ordinates (43.939687,-76.861092) into an online map and getting directions specific to your origin. However, these are the 3 main routes to the Point. Once at the Point you will see the Bird Observatory on your right. Park here and view north out over lake or walk along the shore (NW) in the direction of Traverse Woods. Please note the house on the lake shore (opposite the observatory) is on private property. >From Kingston (via Hwy 33): Follow Bath Road (Hwy 33) west to the Glenora Ferry and cross into Prince Edward County. Continue on Hwy 33 for about 1km and turn left on to Hwy 7 (Lake on the Mountain). Continue 4km and turn right on County Road 25. At T junction turn left onto County Road 8. Follow for about 2km and turn right at bend onto County Road 13. Continue on this road (which eventually becomes Long Point Road) for approx. 30km. >From 401 take either Junction 543 at Belleville (if coming from the west). >From Belleville follow the 62 towards Picton (this will become the 33 as you near town). Look out for County Road 10 and take it until you meet County Road 13 at South Bay. Turn Right and continue to Prince Edward Point. >From Junction 566 (if coming from the east), follow Hwy 49 south to Picton, where you need to pick up County Road 8. After a while County Road 17 splits off to the right and heads toward Black River. Follow this and as you approach Black River, you need to take County Road 16 for a short while before reaching County Road 13 at Black River and following it to the Point. Good birding, Mark. Mark D.
