The 3rd Linwood CBC was held today, December 29, after an unsuccessful
attempt on Saturday in the fog. 54 species were recorded (plus 2 count week
to date), beating our previous totals of 46 and 49. 11 new species were
added to the list, bringing the total to 70 species. Here are the
highlights:

Mute Swan - 1 (new to count)

Northern Pintail - 2 (new to count)- these birds were likely early returning
migrants brought in with the recent warm weather

Common Goldeneye - 16 (new to count)

Bald Eagle - 1 (new to count)

Peregrine Falcon - 1 (new to count)

Red-shouldered Hawk - a regular wintering individual last seen Christmas day

Rough-legged Hawk - 92 (low) looks like we'll be surrendering the title of
North American high for this year

Glaucous Gull - 3 (new to count)

Snowy Owl - 11 (new to count)

Pileated Woodpecker - 1 (new to count)

Common Raven - 1 (new to count)

Purple Finch - 1 (new to count)

White-winged Crossbill - 328 (new to count)

Thanks to everyone who helped out (on both days!)

The Linwood CBC is centered on the town of Linwood, which is northwest of
Waterloo. The fields in these areas are traditional wintering areas for
many raptors, especially Rough-legged Hawk and in some areas Snowy Owls.
