Friends of Point Pelee provide guided birding hikes throughout the Festival
of Birds at Point Pelee National Park of Canada. Proceeds from hikes support

report is a service of the FoPP Hike Leaders.

May 9, 2009

The rain held off and we had another pleasant morning of birding.

Owing to the southerly wind, there was a minor “reverse migration” off the
tip, which included an E. Bluebird, several Scarlet Tanagers,
Meadowlarksp., etc. Later, an adult California
Gull was observed fling past the tip.

In the woods at the tip a female Summer Tanager and Yellow-throated
Vireowere reported. Near the Sparrow Field on the east side, out of
the wind,
people found a Yellow-breasted Chat, and Hooded Warbler.

Along the Shuster Trail, near the start of the Tilden Wood Trail, a Canada
Warbler flitted about. Further along there was an Orange-crowned Warbler.
One could hear Northern Waterthrush there as well, at the wet spot before
Tilden’s Woods.

Tilden was quite productive throughout with several pockets of warblers.
Most notable were Cape May, Wilson’s, Blue-winged Warbler, and Louisiana
Waterthrush. Also noted on the hikes were several Chestnut-sided Warblers,
Yellow-throated and Blue-headed Vireo, Great Crested Flycatcher, and a
Black-billed
Cuckoo.

The Woodland Nature Trail also apparently had a lot of activity. People
found a Yellow-breasted Chat, and a Cerulean Warbler. The male Prothonotary
Warbler continues to be seen at the southeast corner of the trail.

On the Redbud Trail, someone reported a Hairy Woodpecker and White-eyed
Vireo.

No one has reported today from the picnic areas along the west side of the
Park towards the entrance, north of the Centre, but there was a good variety
of birds reported from there yesterday.

Good Birding,

Hike Leaders Pete, Karl, Dave, Justin, Todd and Marianne
