A Juvenile BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER found yesterday on the rocky shoals off of
the Ottawa River mud flats at the end of Scrivens Street continues today
(reported at 10:30 am) on the mud flats between the east end of Andrew Haydon
Park and the north end of Scrivens Street. It is possible that this is the same
bird seen on the Shirleys Bay mud flats on August 21 and 22.
12 juvenile SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS were found August 27 on the rocks and mud
flats at Andrew Haydon Park and east of that park on the mud flats of Ottawa
Beach.
The molting adult LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER was last seen on the Shirleys Bay mud
flats August 27.
Several birders saw both LONG-BILLED and SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS on August 27,
an extremely rare event.
Unprecedented numbers of COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen on August 27, 250 over
Carp and 300+ east of Arnprior.
An adult LITTLE BLUE HERON was seen briefly on August 25 flying over highway
416 about 1 km south of Roger Stevens Drive. This is just north of the
extensive wetland where this species was seen briefly on July 4th.

Numbers of warblers and vireos continue to move through our area.
- Britannia Conservation Area this week; a very good variety of warblers (14+
species) and Vireos were present all week. CAROLINA WREN and GRAY-CHEEKED
THRUSH were also seen. The Deschenes rapids and Ottawa River shore east of the
rapids continues to be very active; the GREAT EGRETS have fledged and left the
nests on Conroy Island. 12 young GREAT EGRETS (3 groups of 4) were seen on
August 25. An exceptionally high number of COMMON TERNS (52) were seen August
27.

Numbers of shorebirds continued to be seen this week.
- the Shirleys Bay mud flats continue to be the most reliable place in the area
to find shorebirds. Seen this week were; STILT, WHITE-RUMPED, BAIRD'S,
PECTORAL, SOLITARY and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS (100+), SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS
(40+), LESSER and GREATER YELLOWLEGS and on August 25 a single AMERICAN GOLDEN
PLOVER. This morning RED-NECKED PHALAROPE (2), PECTORAL SANDPIPER (3) and
"increasing numbers of peeps and YELLOWLEGS" were reported
- St. Albert lagoons on August 24th; BAIRD'S (3), WHITE-RUMPED (1), LEAST
SANDPIPERS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS and on the road into the lagoons GRAY PARTRIDGE
(6)
- Andrew Haydon and the mud flats east to Lakeside Gardens; SEMIPALMATED
PLOVERS and SANDPIPERS all week and AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS (9) on August 25
and adult BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS (6) on August 27

Other interesting sighting were;
- LEAST BITTERN seen August 24 at the mouth of the creek at the west end of
Andrew Haydon Park
- NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRDS continue in Carlton Place
- REDHEAD, RING-NECKED DUCKS and GADWALL continue at the Moodie Drive pond

SPARROW at the Russell lagoons on August 26
- RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET seen in Richmond August 27
- call notes of the small billed race of RED CROSSBILLS (3) over Ottawa Beach
August 27 and over Morisset Avenue August 28th
- TURKEY VULTURES (9) over Woodroffe Avenue August 26

Thanks to everyone who contributed bird observations - Good Birding!
