My wife and I made a whirlwind tour of Ottawa, checking on several different sites. At Britannia C.A. a COMMON LOON was swimming just off shore near the water filtration plant; only a small portion of Britannia Bay is still open, just below the DeschĂȘnes Rapids. An adult PEREGRINE FALCON made an unsuccessful pass at a ring-billed gull on the edge of the ice.
There was a single BOHEMIAN WAXWING on Hilda Road at Shirley's Bay. The waxwing was at the top of the tall spruce trees across from the feeders. Two PILEATED WOODPECKERS and several AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were also present. SNOW BUNTINGS were flying over the intersection of Carling Avenue and Rifle Road. I located a single COMMON REDPOLL flying with several AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES at the Fletcher Wildlife Gardens. A COOPER'S HAWK and juvenile RED-TAILED HAWK were also seen on the grounds. Pat DIRECTIONS: - Britannia C.A. is located at the end of Cassels Street. Take Carling Avenue west to Britannia Road. Follow Britannia Road to the end, turning right onto Cassels Street. - To Hilda Road, return to Carling Avenue and follow for several kilometers, turning right onto Rifle Road. Make another right onto Lois, and one final right onto Hilda Road. The feeders are at the top of the hill. - Fletcher Wildlife Gardens are located on Prince of Wales Drive across from the Experimental Farm and the Museum of Agriculture. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
