A flock of sandhill cranes numbering 50-60 birds was observed flying this afternoon just west of Bannister Lake, east of Ayr. They were later observed foraging in a pasture field nearby.
Although it is common to see a half dozen or so cranes throughout the summer in this area, I expect the larger numbers are due to cranes congregating prior to their migration south for the winter. Banister Lake is located where Dumfries Road and Spragues Road (Hwy 24A) meet the Ayr Road, about 5 km east of Ayr.
