Today my co-worker Kevin Dance found a Saw-whet Owl while we were conducting migration surveys as a part of an Environmental Assessment on private industrial lands in Whitby. The site is situated just west of (<1km) Thicksons Woods. We watched and digi-scoped the owl for a couple of minutes before moving on. It had a rodent in its talons while it appeared (feigned?) to be sleeping. I had earlier checked for Saw-whets in the successional meadow beside Thickson's Woods earlier in the morning with no luck.
The site is not publicly accessible, however the nearby Thickson's Woods are. They are situated at the south end of Thickson's Road. Exit the 401 in Whitby on Thickson's Road and travel south. When you reach the cul-de-sac you've gone just a bit to far. Go north and turn down the litle overgrown lane. The meadow is on the left (north), the woods are on the right (south). Good birding, Brett Woodman _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
