Hi Everyone, We were able to relocate the Smew after Bruce's last sighting around 10:15 this morning. It was west of Ault Island best viewed off of the Battle of Chrysler Farm Monument in Upper Canada Village. After watching it for about five minutes it again flew east, around the southwest tip of Ault Island with a small group of Common Mergansers. Anyone searching for this bird may be best advised to start at this location and then work your way east towards the footbridge to Ault Island. From west to east, it has been seen in the last ~10 days at the following locations (all within 1 km or so):
Battle of Chrysler Farm Monument (44.941264, -75.069524) Ault Island footbridge (44.948991, -75.057587) Ault Island Causeway (44.956821, -75.049453). The first two locations are accessed from within Upper Canada Village and will require you to walk a short ways from your vehicle since most of the roads in Upper Canada Village are now closed for the season. The Ault Island Causeway is accessible by car. The bird seems to fly back and forth between these locations frequently and may also disappear along the south side of Ault Island. To get here, get off the 401 at exit 758 (Upper Canada Road) just east of Morrisburg, then go south to Hwy 2 and turn east. Upper Canada Village comes up first, then Ault Island is immediately east of there.
