Hi all. I'm posting this for Tys Theysmeyer, who saw a White Pelican around Hickory Island in Cootes Paradise this afternoon. Hickory Island can be viewed from several vantage points around Cootes Paradise.
The closest view is from the Marsh Boardwalk along the north shore of Cootes Paradise. From Hwy 403, either east or westbound take Hwy 6 north. Before going up the escarpment take the exit to York Road (look for Royal Botanical Gardens signs). At the stop sign at the end of the ramp turn right (west) onto York Rd (not to be confused with York Blvd). Proceed west on York Rd to the first stop sign. Turn left (south) and proceed to the entrance to the RBG Arboretum on the right (west). Park in the "circle" just passed the Nature Interpretive Centre and walk south towards Cootes Paradise. Follow the trails along Cootes west to the Marsh Boardwalk. If the Interpretive Centre is open you can ask for more specific directions to the various trails. To view the south side of the island go to Princess Point. To get to Princess Point from Hwy 403 either east or westbound take the Aberdeen Avenue exit. At the end of the ramp turn left (north) at the stoplight onto Longwood Rd. Proceed north on Longwood to Princess Point. At the north end of Longwood Rd, it hooks to the east. The entrance to Princes Point parking is at the east end of that hook. This evening (7:00 pm) we looked from Plains Rd. by the High Level Bridge but couldn't see it through the rain. Good luck.
