Hi ONTBirders: My wife and I braved the bitter cold to check out a couple productive locations in the west end of Ottawa. At Shirley's Bay the feeding station was once again dominated by PINE SISKINS, but up to five COMMON REDPOLLS were also present, as well as two male and one oddly brownish female HAIRY WOODPECKER, an AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, and an unexpected male PURPLE FINCH, which made a brief appearance before flying off to forage in the brush. We were told by other birders that a WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL had also made a brief stop of the feeding station earlier on, but it did not return while we were there. As were were leaving we observed a flock of about 30 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on Rifle Road. Good birding! Pat DIRECTIONS: From Carling Avenue, turn onto Rifle Road (watching the trees for raptors and shrikes), then make a right onto Lois Road, then another right onto Hilda Road. _________________________________________________________________ Twice the fun—Share photos while you chat with Windows Live Messenger. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowslive/messenger.aspx_______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
