Logan Kahle and I spent yesterday (21st) birding Wolfe Island, and had several good birds. We started out the morning with four late passerines in the first woodland out to the beach; Black-and-white Warbler, Red-eyed Vireo, Blue-headed Vireo, and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. On the beach, we had 12 late Semipalmated Sandpipers and 16 White-rumped Sandpipers (a county high count in eBird), among numerous other shorebirds. We also had 54 Brant; 42 in flight and 12 on the beach. In the afternoon we did some passerine birding on random roads in the interior part of the island. Our best bird was four Common Redpolls on a dirt road (I’m not even sure which road it was; near a marsh) which gave great looks. We also had Rough-legged Hawk, Orange-crowned Warbler, and many (~20) White-crowned Sparrows in the afternoon. We had 78 species on the day, a pretty good total for late October!
Perhaps most excitingly, Logan arrived on the 20th and found a bird that we and others have identified as a DUSKY CANADA GOOSE. This would be the first record east of the Mississippi in eBird of this normally Western subspecies, and we believe this would be a first provincial record of the subspecies if accepted by the OBRC. It was a great weekend for birding on the west shore of the lake. Good birding, Eric Heisey _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
