Not 5 minutes after my previous post, an adult Yellow-crowned Night Heron flew 
past and circled around before landing somewhere in the reeds on the north side 
of the dyke (opposite of where the avocet is)! I heard it again at 8:20 calling 
but due to the lack of light I could not locate it. See below for directions. 
Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good!
