About 9:30 this morning, Betsy and I stopped to bird the woods at Fort Niagara State Park. As soon as we stepped out of the car, Betsy heard the song of a Yellow-throated Warbler. Good thing it was singing because we would not have looked where it was. We had very good scope views of the bird (bins will work fine also) and watched it for about 30 minutes. Another birder noticed us and we were able it to show to him as well. There were few warblers in the park (4 other species).
DIRECTIONS: Fort Niagara State Park is at the mouth of the Niagara River on Lake Ontario in Youngstown, NY. From the Robert Moses Parkway, follow the signs to the park. Just before going through the toll booths (currently unmanned, I think), exit left (follow signs for Rt 18F). You will do a 180-degree turn, and then very quickly exit to the right. At the bottom of the ramp, turn left onto Rt 18F. Go under the parkway overpass and pull over on the right shoulder a little past the entrance ramp on your left. The warbler was in the open area on the left side of the road (adjacent to the entrance ramp). There is a group of five or so oak trees that the bird remained in for the entire 1.5 hours that we were in the area. He usually foraged (deliberately, as usual)one-third to two-thirds of the way up in the trees. Knowing the song is VERY helpful for locating the bird since he sang continuously. There was also a singing male Orchard Oriole that was often in the same tree with the warbler. Good birding! Willie -------------- Willie D'Anna Betsy Potter Niagara Falls, N.Y. [EMAIL PROTECTED]
