On the off-chance that anyone read the second part of my message (after
mentioning the Pottageville Raven), the N. Goshawk I observed was near the
Robinson Tract, NOT the Henderson Tract, largely due to the fact that there is,
in fact, no Henderson Tract at all! I must have been mixing up my classic NHL
stars: Larry Robinson and Paul Henderson...they were both around the same
height, weren't they?

Many thanks to Theo Hoffman for gently bringing this little bit of
misinformation to my attention.

Seventeen enthusiastic birders, led by John Miles and assisted by George =
Pond, enjoyed a hot, sunny day in the Long Point area, with a tally of =
98 species. That's just the number of bird species. Of course, when you =
are with John, you are also introduced to a wide range of the plants and =
trees that help make Long Point such a pleasure to visit.

The birds seemed unusually quiet, but the sharp ears of John and others =
in our group were still able to identify a lot of great birds.=20

Just some of the highlights:
Cerulean, Golden-winged, Blue-winged, Hooded and Prothonotary Warblers, =
among a total of 14 of that family.

Such dazzling favourites as Scarlet Tanager, Indigo Bunting, =
Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Baltimore and Orchard Orioles, Eastern =
Bluebirds, Eastern Meadowlark and Bobolinks.

A Ruby-throated Hummingbird doing its back and forth display flight.

Ruffed Grouse and Wood Duck families.

Broad-winged Hawks.

Pied-billed Grebe, Common Moorhen and Great Egret,

Forster's and Black Terns

At the end of a long, rewarding day, Jean Iron thanked John on behalf of =
the OFO and of all of us who participated for
sharing his breadth of knowledge of the natural history of the area.

This morning (June 18) while doing my Breeding Bird Survey route along
the Lake Erie shoreline SE of Dunnville, I had a Red-throated Loon in
mostly breeding plumage. The bird was close in to shore at Lowbanks,
right opposite the Lowbanks Firehall.

Directions: From Dunnville, take County Rd. 3 east, through Stromness
and past the turn to Rock Point Prov. Park as it becomes Lake Shore Rd.
continue east to Lowbanks. Check the lake where you can safely pull off
the road to get a view (note that the shoreline is private all along
this stretch).
