The McKinnon Road entrance was flooded and inacessible. But the n.e. section off Ronald Rd. near the village of Minesing was loaded with waterfowl, including 2 Greater White-fronted Geese. Also seen here were Canada Geese, Mallards, Black Ducks, Pintail, Wood Duck, Common Goldeneye, Common Mergansers, Killdeer, Rough-legged Hawk (dark-phase), Northern Harrier, many Wild Turkeys, Horned Larks, and blackbirds. The gulls included 3 Glaucous. Herring Gulls were seen on 4 occasions capturing Meadow Voles which had been forced to surface from their flooded burrows. Directions: From Barrie, take # 90 west towards Angus. At George Johnston Rd. (#28), go north to Minesing village. Turn left on Ronald Rd. Go about 2 kms. to flooded fields on the south side. Spring seemed to arrive overnight in the Ottawa area, with many migrants noted since the last update on March 10th. Many reports of numerous Canada Geese, American Robins, Red-winged Blackbirds and Common Grackles have come in, and Ring-billed Gulls are now everywhere. Waterfowl of interest this past weekend were mainly on the Quebec side of the Ottawa River, with 2 pair of very early Gadwall and single male Ring-necked Ducks and Bufflehead at Parc Moussette, and a pair of Greater Scaup and additional Bufflehead in the Deschenes Rapids. A male Barrow's Goldeneye was still present on the Rideau River south of the Rideau Tennis Club as of the 11th. The 1st local sighting of a Turkey Vulture came from Limoges east of Ottawa on the 11th. Between 3 - 5 Bald Eagles were seen flying over the Eardley escarpment in Gatineau Park on the 10th, a male Northern Harrier flew over the Kemptville area on the 11th, and an adult Northern Goshawk was seen again flying over the Kerwin Rd. trail on the 11th as well. Another adult N. Goshawk was seen at the Clyde Ave. woods on the 13th. A flock of 18 Wild Turkeys was reported from 6th Line Rd. northwest of Riddell Rd. on the 10th and a single very vocal individual was reported from a backyard in Chapel Hill South, Orleans, on the 11th. Owl reports included a Barred Owl on the north side of Carling Ave. near the railroad tracks east of Herzberg Rd. on the 10th, single Great Gray Owls along Rockcliffe Parkway on the 11th and on March Valley Rd. near the Skeet Club on the 12th. A Long-eared Owl was discovered in Clyde Ave. woods on the 11th and another Long- eared Owl (perhaps the same bird) was seen again the following day and remained until at least 2:30pm. The Clyde Ave. woods also hosted a Northern Saw-whet Owl on the 13th. Passerine highlights, aside from the influx of common early spring migrants, were a Fox Sparrow still coming to a feeder on Lassiter Terrace in Beacon Hill as of the 10th, the male YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD still visiting at #23 Manitou St. as of the 12th, and an extremely early Rusty Blackbird at the northwest corner of Mud Lake in the Britannia Conservation area also on the 12th. And finally, the TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was last seen by the property owners at #7389 3rd Line Rd. near Kars on the 11th. Thank you - Good Birding! - End transcript
