It has been a week of limited birding activity, but there have been a few good sightings nonetheless. The Eurasian Wigeon was still present at Dupont on Christmas Day along with a Pied-billed Grebe. On Christmas Eve there was a Canvasback and an immature Iceland Gull at the same location. There is a large concentration of gulls at the Napanee dump including some Iceland and several Great Black-backed Gulls. A Barred Owl was north of Moscow on the 25th and away from the usual locations, two Short-eared Owls were seen near Lansdowne on Boxing Day.
Two dozen Red-winged Blackbirds continue to frequent a feeder near Elginburg and a Common Grackle and two more Red-wings were at a feeder in Collin's Bay on the 28th. The Baltimore Oriole found on the Kingston Christmas Count at Lemoine Point was still present on the 24th. The Amherst Island Christmas Count was conducted yesterday and although I don't have the final tally as yet, by far the best bird of the day was a male Three-toed Woodpecker seen and photographed by many observers. A great way to say good-bye to the old year. Happy New Year Peter Good Kingston Field Naturalists 613 378-6605
