Hi Everyone
Just finished birding the Moosonee/Shipsands Island area. Overall, an
interesting week with lots of shorebirds, waterfowl and land birds migrating
south. On September 17th, spent the day birding Shipsands Island. The
shorebird migration was impressive with 9 flocks of Hudsonian Godwits
totaling 227! Other species included 180 Black-bellied Plover, 48 Am. Golden
Plover, 1800+ Dunlin, 230+ Pectoral Sandpiper, 75+ Sanderling, 110+
Semipalmated Sandpiper and 3 Baird's Sandpiper. A number of species of
waterfowl were observed including 650+ Snow "Blue" Geese, 780+ Northern
Pintail, 350+ Green-winged Teal. Raptors included 2 Bald Eagle, 2 Merlin, 1
Peregrine, 7 Northern Harrier and 1 immature Northern Goshawk. There was a
steady movement of land birds, 1200+ Horned Lark, 750+ American Pipit, and
70+ Lapland Longspur. In the Moosonee/Moose Factory area migration was slow
with small numbers of White-crowned, Lincoln's, Fox and White-throated
Sparrows and Yellow-rumped Warbler moving through. On Sept. 18, 2
Orange-crowned Warblers were observed and today, 2 Yellow Warblers.
Migrating Rough-legged Hawks were noted on Sept. 16 (3) and Sept. 18 (6).
Winter finches were absent except for 2 Common Redpolls at a feeder in town
with 7 American Goldfinch on Sept. 18 and Sept. 19. Checked both the Moose
Factory and Moosonee Sewage Lagoons, highlight was a female Redhead on Sept.
